Graz 2003 – The Cultural Capital of Europe welcomes you
Those who have already been here are thrilled. Graz, you´ll discover, is a charming gem of a city, and yet, is not nearly as crowded as Salzburg or Vienna. Graz, the capital of the Austrian province of Styria, has one of the best-preserved old town areas in German-speaking Europe. The city´s narrow, winding streets, lovely courtyards, and above all, its southern European flair give Graz its special atmosphere. The Schlossberg, the old fortress situated in the center of Graz, offers a wonderful view over the roofs of the city.
Approximately 250,000 people live in Graz. On the one hand, the city can look back on more than 850 years of history; on the other hand, due to its geographical location, it is considered a cultural and economic crossroads for the Europe of tomorrow. As a cultural and academic metropolis, as economic center of the province, and as a place of social stability, the Styrian capital holds a special position in the southeastern European region.
