Rolf Glittenberg studied with Teo Otto and Wilfried Minks. Besides his activities as a set designer at major opera theatres and playhouses, he was also a member of the managements at Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Schauspiel Cologne and Thalia Theater Hamburg, and he is as well Professor for set design in Essen (Volkwang Hochschule).
Important opera productions (amongst others): Hamburg State Opera (Lulu und Wozzek mit Luc Bondy, Fidelio); Vienna State Opera (Der ferne Klang); De Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam (Così fan tutte, Le nozze di Figaro, Macbeth); Salzburg Festival (The Magic Flute, Die Frau ohne Schatten, L'incoronazione di Poppea); La Monnaie, Brussels (Pelléas et Mélisande); Zürich Opera House (Otello, Lulu, Die tote Stadt and Der Rosenkavalier with Sven-Eric Bechtolf, Elektra with Martin Kusej); Edinburgh Festival/Scottish Opera (Macbeth with Luc Bondy); Deutsche Oper Berlin (Les contes d’Hoffmann).
Rolf Glittenberg created the sets for different directors like George Tabori, Johannes Schaaf, Dieter Giesing, Werner Düggelin, Claus Peymann, Götz Friedrich und Peter Mussbach. An especially close collaboration connects him to Luc Bondy, Martin Kusej and Sven-Eric Bechtolf, and he works with conductors like Franz Welser-Möst, Sylvain Cambreling, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Christoph von Dohnanyi and Sir Georg Solti.
